What’s Up, Jennifer Carpenter? The Gruesome Playground Injuries Star on Not Having a Backup Plan
By: Gemma Wilson – Broadway.com – January 28, 2011 – New YorkIt’s been almost nine years since Kentucky-bred, Juilliard-trained Jennifer Carpenter made her Broadway debut in The Crucible alongside Liam Neeson and Laura Linney. She’s been in Hollywood ever since, starring in films like The Exorcism of Emily Rose and Quarantine and creating the role of badass, foul-mouthed cop Debra Morgan in Showtime’s Dexter. (Unfortunately, her personal life has had its own drama; she recently filed for divorce from her Dexter co-star and husband of two years, Michael C. Hall.) Right now, Carpenter is back in New York, co-starring with Pablo Schreiber in Rajiv Joseph’s darkly funny two-hander Gruesome Playground Injuries at Second Stage. It’s a love story, told in non-linear scenes, of Doug and Kayleen, who always reenter each other’s lives when one is injured but can somehow never quite connect. During a break between shows, Carpenter gave Broadway.com the skinny on why Gruesome is just what she needs right now.
How did Gruesome Playground Injuries lure you back to the stage?
The play terrified me. I was scared out of my mind to do it and yet I couldn’t say no. It’s unique because you can look at one part of it and it’s as beautiful as the whole. It met me at the right time. I needed to be a part of this story, and I needed to have some watchers to see me go through this. It feels relevant. What do you love about playing Kayleen?
Early on, Rajiv told me that Kayleen doesn’t cry, and I’ve never played someone with such an enormous restriction. Just recently I was told that if I feel so moved I can cry in the last scene, and now of course I can’t. The scene is about being accountable for her part in why [this couple] could never connect, and also forgiving Doug [Pablo Schreiber] for being so selfish. She’s seeing everything for what it is and for what it wasn’t. The play changes for me every day.

The Dexter star discusses her return to the theater in Second Stage’s Gruesome Playground Injuries.
By: Iris Wiener – Theater Mania – January 27, 2011 – New YorkJennifer Carpenter may have a penchant for taking on bloody roles, as the star of Showtime’s Dexter proves as Kayleen in Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries, now at Second Stage Theater. In the two-character work, in which she co-stars with Pablo Schreiber, Carpenter must portray different ages over the course of 30 years while grappling with a dark, romantic relationship and the way it manifests itself within that time span. TheaterMania recently spoke with Carpenter about the show.
THEATERMANIA: After eight years away from theater — you last did The Crucible on Broadway in 2002 — why was this the right time to return?
JENNIFER CARPENTER: I was getting a little too comfortable with the routine of Dexter, and told my agent and manager I was interested in doing a newer play. They sent this one over and it all happened very quickly. It was a play I was so excited by, I couldn’t quite say why because I didn’t exactly know what it was about and who Kayleen was. After one read I had so many questions flood me. I needed to do it because I was terrified of it.TM: What were some of the questions that first struck you after you had read the script?
JC: I remember asking our director, Scott Ellis, “Why are we doing this play?” What’s fascinating about it is you can pick one sentence out of the whole play, and it’s as beautiful as the play in its entirety. Rajiv is impeccable with his words. What he had written was like good music.

Apparently is there rumours about Jennifer being a favorite for Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower. Really exciting news!
Casting for Ron Howard’s adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower is hot and heavy, with many of Hollywood’s leading men vying for the role of the gunslinger, Roland Deschain.
The New York Post has recently revealed that Christian Bale has pulled ahead of two of the more popular contenders, Javier Bardem and Viggo Mortensen.
The male lead isn’t the only one getting attention though as Dexter‘s Jennifer Carpenter and Ghita Tazi are two of the names being mentioned for the role of Susannah.
Update
Breaking news from SlashFilm has indicated that Javier Bardem has officially been offered the role of Roland Deschain in The Dark Tower but no formal negotiations have begun yet.Who will finally rise as the gunslinger? I guess it’s anybody’s guess at the moment, depending on the validity of the sources, which can occasionally jump the gun at times.
While my personal preference would be Viggo Mortenson, I think Bardem is a more likely candidate than Bale, who is getting ready to suit up as Batman for what might be the last time in The Dark Knight Rises. The Dark Tower is a massive saga that will travel back and forth from the theater to the television so whoever lands the role of Roland will need the time necessary for such a complicated and lengthy filming schedule.

Directed by Tony nominee Scott Ellis, Gruesome Playground Injuries officially opens Jan. 31.
“The dark romantic saga,” according to Second Stage, “explores the cost of wounded friendships. Over the course of 30 years, the lives of Kayleen and Doug intersect at the most bizarre intervals, leading the two childhood friends to compare scars and the physical calamities that keep drawing them together.”
